my j.d. 555 has whine in trans filter, and pressure on gauge is to low side of green in gauge. so i went to change filter and oil is a milky/grey, bottom of filter canister is clean, their is no metal, sludge or garbage of debree. so i assume their is water in oil. i know most people think these machines are junk, but i am wondering where water may of entered at, this machine is new to me, thanks for help

and as a side note... if you drain the transmission to replace the oil, also drain both steering clutch housings... theres about 5 gallons in each side... the oil intermixes with the transmission oil but is drained and filled seperately... after refilling, check the transmission oil several times as all these compartments take awhile to reach their final oil level... the transmission will fill the steering clutch housings (through "leaks" in the steering clutches)til the level reaches a return passage and this causes low level on the trans.dipstick..

Many times top covers aren't sealed well enough, trans and steering spool covers..I've seen steering clutch housings go loose causing leakage where water can infiltrate..

Without knowing any history on the machine,a guess would be,the machine had been flooded, water contaminated oil used in it,severe condensation build up,or just a general lack of maintenance.
