I'am going to change all the fluids in my Deere 450-C dozer. My question is my Deere tech manual printed in 1973 shows a oil level check plug in the steering clutch housing below and slightlly to the front of the fill plug. Mine has no plug but looks like there's a boss in the casting were one could be drilled. My serial number is 320975 makinging it a late 70's machine. Did the later models have a passage that equalized the oil in the clutch housing and transmission case? Do I just add the specified amount of oil in the housing and in the trans case and wait for them to equalize or is there a level plug hidden somewere's that I'am not seeing.

I usually fill the steering clutch housings from the plug that can be seen when you look at the top of the final drive housing. This plug is at an angle , not on the vertical wall of the steering clutch housing..It's just in from the track sprocket area...The original 450-C had a return line on the clutch manifold to the trans case. After a while we were told to leave the line off so the clutch housing could find it's level and circulate the oil back to the trans case...I fill it just so the oil level comes up to the clutch hub , visible from the plug hole....
