HD16 w/ torque converter. just got this thing, no manuals yet. Does anybody know how to check the fluid lever for the torque converter? Also, type & quantity of oil it uses? Thanks.

Tell us which engine you have. Early ones were Buda, Then Allis Chalmers engines. The early ones are fuel oil touque converters. If it has dry steering clutches ,30 weight motor oil in the transmission. If it has wet clutches, ATF in the trans, rear end, and clutch compartments, all one common system ,fill at the transmission dip stick by the driver seat. If it is the 16B power shift, then I think that torque converter is ATF oil fed. Bob Ohio

Thanks to both you guys. This tractor's engine says AC on the manifold. There doesn't seem to be any connection between the converter and the transmission. I was puzzled by a small hose connecting the injection pump & converter. So, I guess that if there is fuel in the tank, the converter is full? The transmission has some nice creamy looking stuff in it. I don't know if the clutches are wet or dry. I've got a manual coming, but you know how you want to fool around with a new gadget. Thanks again

I like the toys also. I have 3 HD21As. Just got the last one 3 weeks ago. 2 of them are cable and the last is a late model all hydrulic blade , tilt ect. All mine are fuel oil converters. On the converters, pressure guage should read up to 40 lbs when you are high rpm on a push. If it goes super high and you have some fuel oil dripping out the bottom of the converter, the return line from the restrictor, mounter by the oil cooler on right side of engine, returning to the tank is plugged. Get the pressure down or you will damage seals. Also grease the three grease lines into the converter every 20 hours with several pumps each fitting. For Manuals, go to E-bay, heavy equipment , manuals, Allis Chalmers. There were 13 listed there , 2 HD16 DP models, $5.00 Just keep watching the site, they will show. Got the complete hd21 set, all models, engines, and accessories, $45.00. Bob

It was the hot oil seeping out of the converter that got me looking in the first place. There is no longer any gauge, it must have gotten lost when somebody replaced the hose coming from the injector pump. I did find the restrictor. And the 3 zerks. Probably put in a test gauge for now and clean the restrictor out. The manual I'm waiting on is from Ebay. There's a big Carco winch covering the serial number, but this machine has a hydraulic blade w/angle & tilt. It hasn't had much care lately. Thanks for mentioning the pressure business, it probably saved more damage being done.

Pull the restrictor off and look thru it to see that the small hole is not pluged. This restriction hole is what builds up the necessary pressure for the torque converter. The line from the restrictor to the tank was plugged on mine. There was a build up of dissolved grease which had reset in the low part of the line where it passed over the torque conv. towards the side by the seat. I use a 0 to 60 oil pressure guage to measure the converter pressure. I measures about 40 at 70% power level. Bob
