JD 450 Question about broken trans cases

I have had several people ask me about my JD 450C. These people are asking if I have had any broken bellhousing or Trans housing bolts. At least three have told me that if you push a tree or load off center on the blade it will bust one of the housings. I thought that you got broken housings from loose bolts.
Any truth to their remarks?
Brian

About the only time I see broken housings is when bolts are left loose , and housings are allowed to move around...Sometimes broken engine frame rails can cause this too...

My Dad had a 350c and it stripped out all of the transmission bolts at one time or another. I over-sizes each at least once and had a machined stud made at least 4 times. I finally cured it by plating the main frame to the final drives. I used a piece of 1" plate with 3 boltholes for the frame and had a piece of 3/4" plat cut to fit the contour of the top front 3 bolts on the final drives and drilled them to fit.Added longer bolts to the finals. The problem stems from the fact there are no bolts from side-to-side on the 350. Only from front-to-back.All the pressure is transfered ,ultimately,to the threads of the bolts, verses the shear factor of the bolt. Of course, that's only my opinion..... Dunno how much difference there is in a 450....

friend of mine was rough on his logging dozer (JD 450) & broke out the original 5/8" bellhousing bolts. Drilled out the bellhousing & used 3/4" bolts & broke them out too. Drilled it to 1" & put in 1" Caterpillar bolts & that held. Another friend used his 450 for 20 years & original bellhousing bolts are still in it.
