Looking at a dozer for use on property in southeast La. Collectior of AC, MM, MH, etc - not big into JD $$$$ & everyone else has them or IH. Thinking of replacing a 1971 JD 450C with a 1974 AC HD6B to double for use and collection - wondering how they compare all other things being equal - straight blade, ROPS, sweeps, condition, etc. Also wondering what they are worth by comparison? Thanks. Ed

Yes , Deere had a problem with machines taking off on their own..But years ago there was a dealer modification performed on all HLR machines out there. I'm sure some fell between the cracks and never got done , but I'll bet at least 80% of them got done..The modification consisted of replacing a valve spool in the trans. and grinding out a neutral position in the shift quadrant [ between 3rd and 4th gear ] I'll bet I did at least 25 machines myself....Not my favorite job due to top cover bolts occasionally breaking off....

I have both - but I'm not sure what to tell you. They both have around the same weight and power. The Deere is more compact and handier to use - especially with the foot operated clutch and with the steering brakes and de-clutch on the same lever. Also, Deere parts are usually easier to get. Engine parts are certainly cheaper. The HD6 is, for the most part, easier to work on. It was also available with transverse-spring mounted track frames for rough ground use - and the 450 Deere series was not. If I had to make my living with a crawler - I'd choose the Deere 450 series over the HD6. But - I only use part time - and subsequently - prefer the HD6. There is nothing on it that I can't afford to fix if it breaks - except maybe the Buda 344 engine. With the Deere ?? If the HL-R goes - it could be a candidate for the part's yard. I also have an Allis HD4 and that is a very handy machine and will do much of what a 450C will do - but it is LESS machine is weight and pushing power. In regard to collectibility - the HD6 is of more interest to me. I was a Deere mechanic for much of my life and got sick of looking at Deere stuff. I now have a lot of Case and AC stuff. In regard to value - the Deere would bring more - at least here in central New York.

thanks for the input - I am looking at the HD6 as a working collectable - got thirtysomething AC tractors so it sounds like I'll go that way if the one I've found looks as good as it sounds from talking to seller.

What is HL-R and is that on AC or JD or both?

Other alternate would be HD11 which might be my real preference if I found one in right condition at right price or HD16 - I found an HD16 that I could buy pretty good - supposed to be in good condition but its not running yet - hasn't run since owner killed in car wreck 2 years ago.

HL-R is the hydraulic clutch transmission in the Deere 450 series - with high-low-and reverse that can be shifted on the fly. Deere was hit with a huge class-action law suit over it for taking off in neutral - but other than that, it's a great transmission - until you have to pay to fix one. I like the HD6 because its Buda 344 c.i. engine is the smoothest diesel I've ever owned. Down side to the crawler is 1st gear is too fast. I think the AC HD11 also uses a Buda engine, but in six cylinder version instead of four.
