I am going to look at a 933 in the morning and would like a heads up on what to look for before making a purchase, any help would be appreciated. The seller saidt its a 60s model. It has a 4 in one bucket, rippers, and is electric start. He did not know the hours. I plan on looking at pins and sprockets for wear, pivot points for wear, starting it up and looking for smoke or blowby, and checking the transmission in forword and reverse. He is firm at $10,000 and it comes with a pintle hitch trailer. I plan to use it to clear brush and stumps, and dig , build, and clean ponds. Again any help or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

I looked at the machine this morning and it did not check out well. The seller was pretty shady and tried to hide the flaws of the machine. Although it was clean pretty tight, and had the options I really wanted. It had some problems; one badly worn sprocket, water in the final drive, a poorly functioning steering break, and blowby with some blue smoke. I think this guy even had his wife call to act like an interested buyer while I was inspecting the machine. He put her on speaker phone and carried on a conversation wherein she asked "is he there" and then later when he asked her name she replied "Jack". I left peacefully but thought what a dingdong. Thanks again for the help and replies.

$10k sounds like a high asking price for a machine that old without a ROPS. Assuming the trailer is worth about $2500, $7500 should command a 933 in very good condition from what I've seen. The 4-1 is a really nice add on though, and so is the ripper if you have a use for it. IMO everything should be good and tight with greater than 50% U/C and only very minor leaks to go for that much.

Thanks for the replies. I am curious to what you might think about the 931. How much better off would I be to buy one of these since they are newer and have the powershift transmission (I think). Thanks again.

At that price with the ripper and trailer buy it. the engine and clutch are no problem, the tranny case is part ofnthe tractor andnis not removable. I would not build a transmission for a tractor. I have the servie manual and parts book if you need information I will be glad to scan it to you.

Leaky finals are a common complaint, but not a problem I've had.

There's a plug under each steering brake, 1/2" or 3/4" MIP, that you could pull to see if it's dry in there. A buildup of leaked oil there will eventually get your brake bands wet.

A 933 I looked at for a friend was missing the plates the plug went into, leaving a roughly 4x6" hole. You remove them to replace the brake bands. Same tractor was missing the belly pan. Seller had them, just didn't want to bother.

Take a look at the clutch dipstick, in addition to the other 2. PITA to work on, but simple. The reverser gear is no longer available from Cat. Lowest one in the case. I had one custom made. Pretty sure I'd be changing the tranny oil immediately at look carefully at what came out. Trust me, you don't want a roller bearing trying to slide under that reverser gear.

You surprised me with that price, but I've never seen one with 4-in-1, nor rippers. And that trailer is certainly worth a bit, maybe a lot.

Good luck.
