I have a chance to buy a good continental 227 to replace my old 226. Will it work? the 227 has a mag on the side. The 226 has the distributor on the top. Can I take this distributor off and put it on the 227 and mount the other equipment where the mag was? I guess what I"m asking is do I have the same block?

As someone else said 226 earlier version, 227 later. I think Continental 226 same as Massey Harris 44-6. should be lots of them around. I think 227 used in lots of later forklifts - should be plenty of those - Believe same story as 244 vs 245 - had a guy tell me 245 nearly same as 244 and found not same - there is a Continental Red Seal Engine Manual that may help if you get to internals.

The answers to your questions is a little bit of this yes no type deal. The 227 replaced the 226. Differences are internal. Cranks, blocks and heads will not interchange. The 226 uses a flanged thrust washer to control crankshaft end play, The 227 uses a common shell type thrust bearing and it is by the center main. This means the block had to be changed (internally) to do this. This also meant moving the position of the distributor. That is why those 3 components will not interchange. External dimensions of the block should interchange. What is the 226 in and what was the 227 in. There are also many different versions of front covers. Hope this helps More questions?

J. The F227 eingine is in my road roller, galion brand. The guy has a tra track that needs and engine and his engine is the 226. So he needs to know if the 2 will enterchange. Also things like disturbutor and manifold enterchange. Hope that fills you in a little better so you can maybe come closer to answering his question

Why don't you two look at both engines. Outward size the two engines are the same, However there are a bunch of different front covers, etc. So are you thinking he is going to take the 226 out and drop the 227 in? You two are there. You may wind up changing front covers, bellhousings, clutches flywheels, and all that good stuff. I have not seen either engine and I am 600 miles away. You two need to look at the little stuff. Does your roller engine use a conventional governor or does it use a tailshaft governor/ Does your 227 drive anything off the front like a hydraulic pump, or any thing off the front of the crank? Does it have a torque converted? I am just giving you something to think about If the cranks have the same configuration on the front they should interchange. Questions? Give me a call

It would be nice if we where close engough to do that but hes about 4 hours from me. Now as far as the drive on the 227 its a clutch type drive, the gov. os on the front right side of the engine. It also has a mag on the engine driven off the gov. It doesn't have any thing driven off the crank shaft at the front. I'm thinking it should probably fit other then him maybe haveing to use some of his old parts from the 226 like the intake/exhaust manifold and his distubtor
