Just got a 555 79' model and wondered about a few things and would appreciate your opinions. Hydraulic pump leaks pretty bad, what is the chance that this is the shaft seal vs. add'l damage to the pump internals? What to look for to determine whether to just replace the shaft seal? (Hydraulics seem fast, not sure of digging strength ) Hoe needs service to all filters and fluids so that will be done pronto. Looks like it has been neglected in that service respect for awhile. Second is the injector pump is leaking pretty badly also. What are the usual suspects here? Is it adviseable to pull the pump and swap or have it rebuilt? Is the governer a part of the pump? Lastly, the brake boots are leaking, is this an easy fix with the new boots? tanks for the input

Thanks for the input guys. Decided to have the injector pump rebuilt and should get it back tomorrow (Fri) . It looked like it was leaking all over. Bushing on front was busted loose from someone trying to tighten. Not sure that the governor was working so seemed like the thing to do. Replaced both air cleaners and boy were they filthy. Replacing the gas and hydraulic, and both oil filters also. Going to pull the hydraulic pump and have it in to diagnose the degree of problem for the leak. Looks like its been leaking for awhile, so a rebuild or replace may be in order. The front resevoir when sitting in the seat is low, the one with the smaller cap, is this the sump that would feed the brake boots?? Will change the brake boots when I do the front hydraulic pump removal.
The rear resevoir has normal level of fluid in it. Otherwise , looks like there may be just a couple of small connection leaks. Should know more when I get some of the existing mess cleaned up and have a better way to see whats oozing where.

The front oil stick is for the tranny and torque converter if you have this type. If you have a torque converter there is a spin on filter kinda hidden behind the battery box area for it. The rear stick is for the rear end and this is where the brakes are.

If yours is just a model 555 with no letters after it then I have a service manual for it I'd sell for $100.00 shipped to you. I need one for a 1988 555 B model and have the wrong one.

Mike M, hey , thanks for the info on the front 'hole'. I do have the torque converter and have located the filter and planning on replacing it. My stick indicates low for tranny and converter. I need an operators manual for the 555, but already have the service manual (got it with the purchase) It is very detailed but doesn't have the basic owner's manual information like fluid recommendations , capacities etc. Would be interested in the owners/operators manual. Will probably get one on the first trip to the NH dealer. Just got my injector pump back with a tab of $433- whew! No worries though, least not with the pump now.

The old 555 hoes had a reputation of being real fast and real strong, so much so that most I have saw had numerous repair welds and extra plating that it did not come with.
I've saw shaft seal leaks from the seal rubber eating a groove into the shaft, also I've replaced shaft seals that would last just a few days and be back leaking again (internal leakage in the pump putting too much pressure on the seal). Kind of a tossup if it can be fixed with just a seal.
You would need to pinpoint where the injection pump is leaking to tell if it would be user servicable, but like Mike said check all the external lines and fittings just in case. The governor is part of the pump, I always have the pumps rebuilt if there is a problem I cant fix, I never buy new or rebuilt from dealer, but I've got a good pump shop that I use.
Brake boots are not a terribly bad job, most things that have these type of boots are leaking, yes that should fix the problem for a while, you will need to drain the oil or it will drain for you when taking these out.

Well the hyd pump was shot and not fixable, so got a new one to put on. Got the hyd tank off to clean and check the bottom screen. Cleaned the hyd 'radiator' cooler. Guessing that hose connected to it is return and not high pressure? Need to replace it also. Wondering about the front 'nosecone' and how hard it is to remove? Like to hear suggestions. I have all of the evident things undone to lift off.
