I recently bought 58 Cat d2. The mag was bad so I bought a rebuilt one and am now getting spark. My question is how to install mag to get correct spark timing? Mag gear is stamped with an M on one tooth but meshing gear has no marks on it.

Its been a little while since I've done mine but here goes, There should be a plug on the backside of the casting the mag mounts to. Remove it and look through there and you should see a mark (might be faint but should be there) Get the number one cylinder onto the compression stroke as you slowly rotate it and watch closely for the mark to appear in the hole. A flashlight and mirror might help. Once you find it just line up the two marks as you install it and you should have it. Tim
