JD 24 skid loader variable drive unit questions

I've got a JD24 skid loader - like a Mustang. It has a 6 cylinder Chevy motor in it, and I just got it running. The problem is the variable drive unit, it seems when I use the lever there is no response from the vavle. The valve feeds the drive unit and a distribution block that has about 6 or 8 lines coming off it. I'm hoping that its just the vavle, but is there any way I can check the drive unit easily? How does it work exactly? Does it have a spring inside it to move it back to an idle position? I get that when you lever the valve on, it will narrow up and effectively make the pulley diameter larger to go faster. But why does the valve have what seems like a nuetral posistion - then its marked slow one way and fast the other. There is only one hydraulic line going to the drive unit - wouldn't it return to its normal position in that nuetral setting? If its only a single acting hydraulic unit, how then will putting the vavle in the slow position pull the unit farther apart? I need some good advice on how to go from here. Thanks very much!
Paul

When you move the lever to go faster, it pumps oil into a cylinder that moves the sheave halves to change the ratio. The other sheave has a spring that compensates to maintain belt tenstion.

When you move the lever to go slower, it lets oil out of the cylinder. The neutral position merely traps the oil at whatever speed.

I've got a 170 (I think) with a Yanmar 4TN92 diesel instead of the Wisconsin that threw a rod.
