Does anyone know of a source and suggested prices for pins and bushings for an AC 653/HD4?

They are not all the same, although the tracks are interchangable between H3s, HD3s, H4s, HD4s, 650 series, etc. Early machines have small diameter pins and bushings in the tracks - and as far as I know - nobody makes replacement pins and bushings. I think the old and small bushings are 1 3/4" O.D. Later and larger diamater pins and bushings are available either from OEM or Berco. OEM can be gotten from many former industrial AC dealers - parts are still being made by Minpar and AGCO. You need to get the casting number off a track-link and then call any good track shop. They can cross-reference the number and tell you what is available. I recenty went through it with my HD4. My original tracks had the small bushings. I found a second used set of tracks - but they ended up being BERCO, and were worn down over a 1/4" so all the hardness was gone. I could of pin and bushed them - but it was not worth the expense considering the links were now soft and would wear out fast. I found a complete set of tracks with dozer pads at a local junkyard, almost like new - and bought them for $800.

Thanks for the info. I beleive I have the larger pins on mine. There are very few AC machines here in Alabama. Do you know of any junkyards in the southeast that would have these machines? Also, what can I expect to pay for a used sprocket?

From what I've seen lately, used parts are very expensive from just about anybody. I wish now I'd bought more part's machines when I had the chance. So, in regard to what you might expect to pay for sprockets ?? I recently bought some used HD4 parts at a tractor salvage yard. After many requests by me, for the parts, they told me either "they did not have the parts", or did not "have time to get the parts off the machine." So, I went there myself, found the parts, and took them off - in the snow. So, the following prices are what I paid with ME doing all the work. Tracks - at first $1000 -but I argued the price down to $800. The sprockets are still there and off - but they wanted $200 each and I refused to pay it (so, the original package-deal price for tracks and sprockets would have been $1200). I also bought an oil-pan for one of the final drives - cost $100. I later discovered I needed a complete track-frame. I asked about it - at the same place - since I knew the tracks and sprockets were already off. The bottom rollers weren't any good - but the frame was straight. After many attempts to buy it - and get them to remove it, they told me it was off and I could come and get it for $800. So, I drove over there with my 2 year son along, with my trailer, and found out they'd done nothing. I went back with some wrenches and little boy, and spent half a day trying to get it off and keep him from wondering off too much. I finally had it all ready to remove except . . . the loader-frame (it was a loader, not a dozer) kept the track-frame from sliding all the way off the cross-bar. So, I asked the "salvage crew chief" if someone could torch off the crossbar. So, I waited out front, feed the now greasy little kid - and about an hour later they came out with the frame hanging from their forklift. They cut the WRONG part - they actually cut off part of the track-frame. So, we argued someone and they lowered the price for the now damaged frame to $500. In my mind, it was now barely worth $100 - but I took it anyway. This was all at McFaddens yard in New York. A few other prices. I needed a diesel cylinder head for my HD4 (650 series will work). McFaddens wanted $500 - condition unknown. Wengers in Pennsylvania wanted $350 for a "bare" used head - i.e. they keep all the valves and springs. And, new valves are NO longer available for the HD4s - you have to change the seat angles and use 650 series valves at $20-$30 each. So, a $350 head could of cost me close to $600 to use it. Finally, I tried Marshals in Pennsylvania. They sent me a complete, good condition used head for $200. I pulled it apart, reground the valves and seats and all was fine. I later needed a ring-gear carrier and two splined stub-shafts for the rear-drive. I went through the same sort of search and finally bought from Marshals again - $600 for the carrier and two shafts. In retrospect, HD4 I fixed up - should of become a parts machine instead of a user.

Man I'm sorry to have brought up those bad memories. I hope not to have as much trouble with mine. It is a 653 by the way. Thanks for all the invaluable info. I really appreciate it.

653 is pretty much a HD4 with a few improvements. Bottom rollers and track-frames are beefed up a little, and the engine uses different angles on valves and stronger connecting rods and bolts. Anytime I price new parts from AGCO or Minparr, they are always 650 series parts intended to retrofit the HD4s.
