Cat D2 performance?

Hi all,

I have been considering buying a well preserved 1944 Cat D2 as a tool for working my 1 acre hillside property. I need to make a small road, terrace the hillside, move some dirt and grade the property as I go.

Is the old Cat a good machine for this short-term job? The appeal is that I could work at it bit by bit without arousing a lot of unwanted interest from the local authorities and the small Cat "fits" the woodsy hillside I need to work on.

I am wondering if it will climb a fairly steep grade, have enough power to do real work, and be safe to operate?

Opinions?

Thanks,
Randy

I have had several D-2's they are strong working machines but very dificult to grade (specialy in soft ground, sand) because of the short tracks. I had to replace a head on my pony motor last year woter in oil.

Good luck

The 3J series D2 is standard gauge and the 5J series is wide gauge. You definately want the wide gauge for sidehill work. The D2 is most excellent for this. Safety is mostly up to the operator, don't take any chances and the Cat won't let you down.
