I have a Warner & Swasey Hopto 550 excavator with a 4-53 Detroit diesel that has a smoking problem. I know that Detroits smoke normally, but this one will belch out thick black smoke at full throttle and has what sounds like a spark knock. If you run it slower, it runs fine and smokes little. Anyone have an idea as to what may cause this? Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions. It sounds as though it may be an injector problem. The air filter is clean and the smoke that it's kicking out is definately black, not blue. It's not using a lot of engine oil.

For the most part I agree with the other posts on the smoke. You could very well have one or more injectors with the tips worn or carboned up to the point their not atomizing the fuel properly. First thing you need to do is pull them and visually inspct the tips. If their covered in carbon or otherwise damaged replace all of them. You can replace just one injector but it's not really a good idea as it will create an unbalanced load on the engine with one fresh injector "firing right" and three others not quite right. If there is no visible damage you can visially check the spray pattern fairely easily also. Begin by holding the injector in your hand, by the barrel, with the nozzel aimed away from you and the fuel control slide held in for full stroke. Now hit the top of the spring with a soft faced mallel, this simulates what happens when the rocker arm hits the injector to stroke it. When you hit it you should be able to observe the spray pattern. If you see several very fine mist patterns then it should be OK, if you see several streams then somethings definately wrong and they need replacing. Basically if you see anything but a very find mist then it's time to change them.---That covers the injectors. Now, is it using oil excessively and could the smoke be more blue than black? For a 4-53 oil usage, per factory specs, is anywhere from 1/2 to around 1 3/4 quarts per ten hour period depending on the operating RPM of the engine. Reason I say this is it could possibly be sucking oil past the blower seals at the higher RPM. As the blower sucks harder it is more prone to draw oil past worn seals and force it into the combustion chamber where it gets burned. This problem would be worsened if the filters were extreemly dirty also. The problem could also be just a worn set of oil control rings on any one or more of the pistons. At the higher RPM their not able to do their job properly and again you get burned oil in the exhaust.---In the end unless it'a a dirty air filter your gonna have to open up the engine to check anything. Start by checking the injectors and do a basic tune up. Just pulling the injectors will require you to set the valve lash and injector timing when you put it all back together. If it hasn't been done in awhile take the time to start fresh and set everything starting with the governor gap and working through the rack setting, etc. It doesn't take long to do the additional settings and in the end you'll have a much better running engine for your time. Good luck and if you run into any problems post again.
