I have a D31-16 that I took the batteries out of last fall. They had the + cable going to + terminal. The had a jumper between the negative on the same battery and the + on the second battery. The - on the second battery was then grounded. Does this sound right? I don't want to do any welding :)

that sounds right mine d31a-17 is 24 volt ground to - + of that goes to - of other then + to positive

It sounds as though you have a 24 volt system. DWF
