D2 pony motor water in oil

Hi all,

I looked at a decent 1944 vintage D2 today and might be buying it. It is the 5J model with wide tracks and for the age seems to be in excellent shape. The biggest problem is that the pony motor has water in the oil, presumably from a coolant leak.

What is the most likely cause of the leak? Would it only be a blown head gasket or is cracking of the block/head likely as well? Not sure what I am getting into here. The main engine has clear oil and turns over easily as does the pony. Except the pony has mud for oil.

Randy

Forgot to mention that while the bowl of the air cleaner is removed, remove the spark plugs and turn the engine over to blow as much emulsion out the plug holes as possible.

You ought to consider taking the bowl off of the pony engine air cleaner, if it has an oil bath air cleaner on it. Mine got water in the bowl one time and it pushed the oil too far up into the element ( you know oil floats on top of water and often turns it milky or gray looking and thick )and every time I'd turn the engine over, the draw of the pistons would pull the emulsion into the intake, carb and then combustion chambers. It would foul the plugs. Crankcase got it in it too, had to change the oil after I cleaned out the bowl and replenished it with new oil. Then it started and ran good. Could have been condensation or whatever. As soon as I started pulling on the air cleaner bowl to remove it, water ran out of it and the oil was the same color that was in the crankcase....
