JD450C Track Adjustment

Two questions:

1) My right side track is increasingly making noise, especially when turning, like it's coming off the sprocket. Turning back the other way makes it "bang" back on. I think I have the track tension/slack about right... maybe not? Is there something else I need to adjust. (See linked pictures).

2) My left hand track adjuster appears to be cracked. Is this something that a) can be ignored, b) can be welded, or c) should be replaced. Picture linked.

Thanks!

- Mark

i see you have a bachoe on it well i have a case 450 with a hoe on it and that makes the front REAL light and with the hoe on you have to run the tracks tighter because the front rollers like to ride off the track with the hoe on so your track don't track as well best is to remove the hoe it's a 5 minn.[ or less] job real easy

Something bothered me about the pictures of the right side. I don't recall JD rollers without the outside shoulder. Checked the online parts book and, sure enough, your shoulders are GONE. You need rollers in a big way. The one right in front of the sprocket also appears higher (out of line) like the bushing is gone.

I think that's just an optical illusion due to how far out/off the track was (which probably means it was/is WAY too loose). I added a picture showing the rollers.

That said, I'm looking up the names of parts as you guys are mentioning them so what would likely be painfully obvious to someone who knows what to look for, very well might not be to me. Thans for the observation.

Looks to me the right side track is way to loose. That will cause the troubles your having with coming off the rollers and climbing the sprocket as well as the increased noise and wear on the sides of the sprocket. The procedure to tighten the track is to alighn a pin and bushing over the center track carrier roller and place a flat edge on top the track from the spocket to the center carrier and measure the sag in the track. It should be 7/8 to 1-1/8 inch. Track tightness is critical on Deere crawlers especially loader crawlers. I would'nt waste time in replacing that tensioner on the left side either as it looks like its completelly broken off in the picture. It is putting uneven pressure on the idler and track frame. You can get new complete aftermarket tensioners fairilly reasonable, you just bolt in and add grease.

The right side is obviously worn out but there may be more. Make sure the track frame has not come loose at the crossbars. Then check the alignment of the idler to make sure it is parallel and in line with the sprocket.

I'm assuming your pins and bushings are good, correct? If not, the pitch of the track chain will not match the sprocket teeth and will ride up on it when under tension. If the train pitch is good, it's most likely your track and frame is just out of adjustment. #1 the sprocket must be centered in the track chain (adjusted by shims), #2 the angle of the front idler MUST be adjusted properly (with shims again)or the track will constantly try to walk off the rollers- one side or the other. After you first make sure the sprocket is centered in the track, run the crawler straight ahead on flat ground and stop - and look to see if the sprocket is still centered - or the track-chain is riding to one side or the other. From the photo, it looks like it's rubbing one side because the front-idler is out of adjustment. In regard to the adjuster - I can't tell if the tube is broken or that's just dirt. If broken, it usually can be changed without splitting the track. Loosen things up, remove the tension-spring assembly to give working room, and replace.

I added a few more pictures based on the comments and questions received (Thanks everyone!... dialup users beware.) The pins/bushings don't feel out-of-round to me but I assume I can't adequately answer your question without measuring them?

The clearance at the front idler looked ok after driving it as you suggested but, the track tension looks a lot looser than I thought.

It looks like the previous owner welded/epoxyed some reinforcement angle iron between the adjusting cylinder and the rod and that's what is cracked. (See cleaned up pictures). I can't tell whether that rod is supposed to move (if so it hasn't moved in a long time) or if that's just an outer sleeve with an inside cylinder that moves. I'll see what I can decipher from the tech manual...

I'm very grateful to all for the help,

- Mark

LOL! I had to swap batteries in the camera and was too lazy to reset the date. We're practically neighbors... please do email me your link.

The funny thing is that the track with the cracked adjuster/cylinder is the one I'm NOT having problems with. I haven't figured out what's causing that slipping/wear on the right side track.

Thanks!

Look at the second picture, the tube into the adjuster is broken. You will need to split the track to pull the unit and put in a new tube. The new replacement tubes are chrome plated and last much longer. The rest of the tracks look to be in very good condition.

Think I would replace adjuster. Looks like maybe a roller or two also. just my 2cents.
