I've been looking for a dozer to use on our rural property - punching in a loooong driveway, home-site and outbuilding prep, clearing a heavily brushed/treed fence line etc. I don't mind some fix-up work to keep the price low, but don't want to spend the rest of my life re-furbishing the dozer just to be able to use it.

Came across a JD 450C crawler dozer the other day that needs work, and the price "may" be reasonable. Type 500J, serial # 231278T. It has the 6-way blade, winch on the back etc.

It has been parked out in the weather for the last several years and is not cosmetically pleasing to say the least.

Known issues according to uncle and family who own it and have previously run it:
- It has a broken track adjuster thingie that has been removed, and my bil was going to fabricate a new one (the dozer is sitting next to his shop).

- Fuel tank has a leak.

- Cosmetics - paint rust, seat is tore up etc.

- Has been left with the engine cover off (exhaust stack is covered) and the turbo looks rusted up. But that may be mostly surface rust, I don't know.

Of course it "ran just fine" (other than the track adjuster) when it was parked years ago. I don't know much about dozer's, but the sprockets and the tracks look like they have very little wear.

1. How can I find out the date of manufacture on this unit?

2. I've been reading the old posts on here and there is mention of a recall, or something about it jumping in gear. How do I tell if the repair for this issue has been completed? Can I call the factory with the serial number and inquire? Anybody have the correct factory phone #?

3. Brother in-law is a talented machinist fabricator, and I have no doubt he fabricate a new tensioner (the yoke shaped thing). But are there after market tensioners available that don't cost an arm and a leg?

4. What is the repair procedure for fixing a leaking tank?

5. What else should I look for on this dozer?

6. About how much does this model weigh?

7. Do people pay "anything" for non-running dozer's these days, or are the owners paying people to haul them away?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Wayne

Well, the deere dealer tells me that serial # 231278T is a 350C loader crawler...

Hmm, the machine has 450C decals, looks like a 450, and most definitely is not a crawler...

A 350C has a three cylinder engine and a 450C has a four cylinder engine.

I recovered a 450-c from a field a few years ago and had to redo the entire engine, turbo exhaust, etc. I found all the parts easy to get at the local ag or construction house. ( the ag price for the exact same deere part number is a constant 15% less, and they can often order it for you )I have a ranch that I use it on for fencerows , roads , clearing ceder, etc. and I absolutely love it. I paid 4 grand for the machine, and did the work myself and it cost another 4 grand to fix, but I have a machine that will last a good while and I feel confident that I could slap a coat of paint on it and make a moderate profit. The wet clutches help on a machine that has sat awhile, and the paint and rust aren't really a big deal. I think the HL-R transmission is something that would cost you if it wasn't OK, But I understand that, that series machine is really a pretty good tractor. I see them advertised for anywhere from 8 thousand to upwards of 20 thousand all the time around texas. the weight for one with a 6 way blade is right at 14,350. ( with ROPS ) The ser. number may have the letters 450c at the beginning, but this doesn't mean it is a C series machine, as the ser. number determines that. The C in the number designates that the tractor was set up with an inside the track 6 way blade, instead of on of 2 other types. Be sure it is a C series machine to know if it has wet steering clutches, as this is a plus. I vote for going for it based on my usage.

You can call a JD Industrial dealer and they should be able to pull up a history given the serial number. If your primary interest is getting your jobs done you may do better getting a machine that is in better shape, using it for what you need to do and reselling it when you're done.

Assuming the dozer is comparable to the loader it'll weigh 16000-17000 lbs. There are lots of 450Cs still out there so the machine has value even if only for parts.

The JD industrial dealer is telling me the serial number is 13 digits, and my number 231278T is not the serial number.

Yet, that is the number labeled as the serial number off the plate that is next to the seat on the crawler.

Is the above number a typical serial number??

That's the right place to get serial #. On mine, that number is preceeded by what I presume is the model/configuration "450CA" (probably different for a dozer), but that'd only get you to 12 digits.
