just bought a komatsu d20p-6. i am doing some maintenance before i use the machine as i see it has been neglected. my operator's manual says to drain the oil from the transmission,bevel gear case by removing the three plugs on the bottom. i removed the rear plug first and several gallons of oil came out. next i removed the plug on the left side and a couple quarts came out. when i removed the plug on the right side, no oil came out. it was totally dry, and some crud fell out. i stuck my finger in the hole and felt around. it seems the bottom of the case on the right side has about 1/4 inch of crud(looks like rust and friction material)in it.

can anyone tell me what should be in each of the 2 side plugs? the book made it sound like oil should come out of all three holes.

the dozer has trouble turning right also - any connection?

The plugs on either side should be dry as this is your steering clutch compartments.
Oil in the left side case would cause a problem making a right turn. You've got a bad seal that has the discs and band oil soaked.

thanx for the reply JCSinGA.

could you help me understand how the steering works- or should work?

when i try to make a right turn by pulling the right handle half way, nothing happens(dozer goes straight). if i pull the right handle all the way to engage the brake, it does turn, but it takes a lot of power(almost chokes off at times). is it a combination of the left clutch slipping and the right clutch not releasing properly? if so, why does it make the sharp right turn - shouldn't the left clutch slip then too if oily? is the extra power needed in the tight right turn because the right clutch is not releasing properly?

thanx for the help! i will be pulling the covers off to eyeball the situation in the steering compartments.

I apologize it's been so long getting back to you, my e-mail notification went to my junk mail for some reason and I rarely check it.
It does sound as if the right clutch is not releasing, since it is choking the engine when turning. Also it seems that there may not be enough oil on the left side clutches to cause them to slip yet if it still will turn with power, but the test will be when it starts pushing dirt.
Usually a crawler will still track straight with one clutch disengaged if on flat ground, it will make a difference if going uphill.
These are dry clutch machines and susceptible to all the problems associated with dry clutches, frozen internal linkages from lack of lubrication, frozen clutch pack from water entry or condensation, and leaky seals that soak the pack and brake band and etc.
