Additional safety tip for backhoe loader operation

Just an added tip for the safety portion of this site. Never travel paralel to an open trench with your machine when backfilling or adding material. I've seen more than one green operator cave in the trench this way, and they alway's have the same freaked out look on their faces after. It only stands to reason the weight of the machine could easily cause a cave in. And in one instance the brand new 780 Case had to be pulled back on to it's wheel's, after I'd under dug around the beast with my smaller 580. The operator got lucky in that case, and only dented the cab a little and lost a few light's and thing's, not to mention what it did for his pride? Had to get him to sit down in the shade to collect his thought's and ease the shaking, but he was fine after a while.

Back in the late 80's I was a working service manager for the now defunct Mahnen Machinery..There was a " Grey Iron " 410-B with the straight vertical stabilizers. One of my mechanics was looking for a leak at the backhoe control valve , had pulled the plastic shroud up over the levers..While starting the machine up , the machine started to power down [ boom to the side ] ..It was the only backhoe to roll over inside the shop I ever heard of....Instead of shutting off the key , he walked the windows till it stopped moving..It took a 490 excavator to right it..Only a mirror and side glass were the fatalities..Besides some pride..... .

Have a friend that knew some guys at CAT when the first D10's came out. As the story goes, they had given one to a pipeline outfit in Texas for field testing and it blew up a couple of engines in rapid succession. The first couple got sent back to the fatcory for inspection and new ones sent out in their place without alot of fanfair. By the third or fourth the factory sent out their engineers to see if they could figure out what the problem was. They said as the were coming up to the site they saw a cloud of black smoke resembling a phone pole rising up in the sky. As they got closet they found it was coming from the stack on the ten. Long story short, they finally got a chance to talk to the operator and ask him how the liked the machine. His reply was 'I love it. With this thing I can backfill the long way. He-- if the grounds right I can do at least five miles straight and never let out of it...' Needless to say they figured out pretty quick what was blowing the engines...
