JD 450C recall work and other

Ok, I finally got the correct serial number off a 450C crawler/dozer I'm considering buying. Called the JD dealer and they looked up the number which returned as a 1975 450C. They said the recall work for the "starter" and the recall work for the "shift lever" has been completed on this unit.

1. Are these the major recalls for this model? Does this address the jumping into gear problem I've read about on the forum?

2. What is the process for trying to start one of these things that has been sitting for years? Initially, what I'm looking for is to see if it will even start/run. And I'd like to move it to move level ground before doing much more work on it if possible.

I understand I will probably need to change fluid and filters, but would like to see if it will run/move at all first.

Thanks
Wayne

I never heard of any recall on the starters and we sold an awful lot of 450Cs. What there was - was a mandate to put a little plastic cap on the big lug of the starter solenoid on just about everything Deere had - including industrial, ag., and forestry. It was to prevent you from jumping the starter-solenoid with a screwdriver - and thus bypassing the neutral safety switch. In regard to the 2010/450 series recall - it was for every machine that Deere ever built that used the HL-R transmission. It ended with mid-range 450Cs because at some point it time, the updates got done at the factory. Parts used in the recall depended on how worn and how old the machine was. Basically, all it amounts to is this: The HL-R gets a spool in the shift valve with longer neutral slot. And, the 4 speed range transmission gets a slot sawed or ground into the shift quadrant that provides a gear-neutral. Without the updates, and especially with worn linkgage, it was pretty easy - and common - to have a 450 with the HL-R in neutral and have it take off - sometimes killing somebody. In regard to starting after sitting? Diesel fuel lasts a long time. Smell it - if it's bad - you'll notice right away. If it's seems okay, I'd make sure there's oil in it, put batteries in it, and crank it over.

Forgot to add:

3. At one time during my internet research I came across a pdf file that was a simple specification sheet covering the 350 and 450 models. Nothing fancy, just a two page spec sheet. Thought I bookmarked it, but of course now I can't find it again.

Anybody know about this document?

Thanks
Wayne
