I have had this backhoe for about 5 years always started but cold blooded in cold weather. last weekend it was pulling the battery down while trying to start it. I put a charger on it to try an help. It will not turn over now. could the starter be bad an could a bad starter pull a battery down? also the starter was hot to the touch.

I had the same symptom on my JD450. Your starter is probably shot like mine. I don't know how many times your starter armature has been cut but that's usually the issue. It can't take pulling high amps anymore without smoke testing itself. I bought an after-market starter from e-bay thanks to JDemaris. It's a light weight/high torque starter and works fine. ($179.90)> If your starter is original to the equipment, I would just replace it. BUT, before you do make sure you trouble shoot your system. What shape are the positive and negative cables from the battery to the starter like.? Corroded? Is the point where the cables go into the terminals corroded or greenish looking. If the cables are fines and the battery has a "FULL" charge, I would then by -pass the cables completely and connect a Starter/Charger unit directly to the positive terminal on the starter and the negative to a real good ground close to the starter but NOT the starter housing. Then when you turn the key, the battery will energize the solonoid for the starter but the primary power to the starter will come from the path of least resistance i.e. the Start/Charger cart. Remember, low voltage = lots of heat. Good luck.
