JCB 1400B wont move forward or backward

Hello,

I have a 1987-88 JCB 1400B that will no longer move forward or backward. I had driven it on an off camber area to dig a septic system perk hole and when I was done and ready to move on the machine would not move forward or backward, so I used the backhoe to pull myself backwards a few hundred feet. I then tried putting the machine in reverse and it worked for a short while but it started acting up again and now wont move. This has happened before in the past but the tranny would start working properly after a short while.

The machine doesn’t have a loader dump control switch, it looks like it was removed long ago and I don’t see any wires under the machine for it that are shorting out, snagged etc.

A while back I replaced the two square wire connectors that screw onto the top of the solenoid as the old ones didn’t look to good and there was a lot of gunk built up around where they connected to the solenoid.

Could the solenoid valve body that sits on top of the transmission be the cause of the transmission problem?

If not, is there a switch, relay or fuse that is located somewhere on the machine that may have gone bad and need to be replaced?

Any advice is appreciated!

Its a good idea to disconnect the battery when tampering with the wiring,do you mean the igniton switch is coming apart,if it is replace it before the machine catches fire,I doubt if you damaged any of the relays by what you done, make sure they are all pushed home,if you got the cermaic type fuses clean the ends and the contacts in the box,you can start the engine by crossing the starter, make sure the gears are in neutral, brake on etc, switch on the key and cross the heavy cable on the starter motor solenoid with the light wire that goes beside it and the engine will start.

Thanks for the advise guys. I checked the wiring going from the forward/reverse lever to the top of the solenoid valve body. Everything looked OK. I checked the fuse box again and low and behold the forward/reverse solenoid/dump relay fuse was blown....I replaced it started up the machine and it moved forward and backwards just fine....I think the wire that used to control the loader dump control switch may have contacted something when I was driving off camber and shorted the fuse. I have since secured the wire to ensure it will never short again.

Now I have developed a new problem, after starting up the machine and testing it to make sure it went forard and reverse. I shut it down and checked the wiring, I noticed a couple of wires that plugged into the ignition switch were loose so I crimped them down so they would fit more snug...well I must have done something wrong as now the machine doesnt do anything....a couple of solinoids make a clicking sound so I assume I must have damaged them and also the ignition looks like it is coming apart.

If I replace all the (6) solinoids located below the instrument panel do you think this will fix the problem? I have no idea if they have ever been replaced and they all look pretty old and dirty.

If you have any other advise let me know and thanks for any and all input.

Your JCB has an electric controlled forward reverse shuttle,it sounds you have an electrical problem, the circuit for the forward reverse is a simple one,a wire carrying power connects to one side of the nudge switch, from the other side it goes to the forward reverse switch, then there are two wires going to the two solenoids on top of the shuttle, when you select a direction you send power to one of the solenoids and it opens a valve that allows the fluid pressure to engage the clutch,if the nudge switch is bypassed the wires must have been connected together in order for it to work as the nudge switch is closed till you press it and cut the power from going to the forward reverse switch which in turn cuts the power going to the solenoid, check all the fuses, the forward reverse switch has been known to fail, find the plug on the switch tail piece and disconnect it one wire should have power, the other two are for direction, power one of them and you should have drive you need the key switch on,if that works its a fair chance the forward reverse switch has a fault.
Good luck

I'm sure ajk or one of the other JCB experts will be here shortly to help sort out your problem. To me it sounds like you're losing the prime on your shuttle shift. I'm definitely no expert on how these units work, but I know they have a clutch pack along with a torque converter. The clutch pack and the converter require pressurized hydraulic fluid to function. If the machine is significantly tilting to one side or the other it's possible the fluid within the reservoir is moving to one side leaving the pickup tube either partially or wholly sucking air. Once the air gets into the system the clutch pack and/or converter will not get the pressure they need to function properly (resulting in no forward or reverse drive). Did you check the fluid level in the shuttle shift and ensure it's all the way up to the mark? My powershift loader will start losing transmission oil pressure (and will even stop) if I am on a strongly left leaning slope and the oil level isn't slightly overfilled. Also, is there a dent in the shuttle shifter oil pan? I had a VW Rabbit once that had a dented oil pan which pushed up on the oil pickup tube and caused it to sporadically lose oil pressure. Also make sure no there are no "gotchas" like some previous owner putting the wrong dipstick in it (making it seem fuller than it is) etc. If all that looks ok and it's definitely not a linkage and/or electrical interlock problem, then drain the oil, measure how much comes out and compare that to what the specified capacity is. Then drop the pan and look over the filter (unless it's a canister type) and the pickup tube. Good luck.
