We have a JD 450 and the tranny is running hot. We've done everything we know of to correct it, even had the radiator and oil cooler rodded. The tranny is not slipping or giving any trouble as of yet. Anyone have any ideas what to look for? Should we prepare to open her up and rebuild it?

Trans doesn't appear to slip but , does it have adequate presure?? A little slippage goes a long way to make heat..Can you shift the HLR without using the clutch pedal at wide open throttle ??You should be able to..Put a gauge in the trans port to check for correct presure [ 185 lbs. ]Is the transmission shifting too slowly between shifts?? Or too fast..The only other thing I can think of is the cooler relief valve is stuck..

I have the same problem. Done and checked everything except open it up. Not usre if I want to tackle that one.
Never thought about the brakes dragging. I will look into that. The pins are badly worn on mine, would this cause a drag and put stress on the tranny?

No, the pins shouldn\\\'t cause this sort of problem. We used to use a lot of 450s back in the early 80s. We especially had trouble with the pre-B 450s. JD didn\\\'t seem to have their act together on the first run models...particularly the late 60s and early 70s models. If your\\\'s has HLR transmission, which I assume it does...it\\\'s more than likely going to take a rebuild. Anytime we had one start to heat up, it always ended up the same. We always tried everything you said you\\\'ve done, and the results were always the same. A teardown. If it\\\'s an early 450, I\\\'d pretty much guarantee it. Breaking a 450 open to get to the transmission is probably the single most difficult job there is on the machine. (Everything comes off...tracks, final drives, ROPS, tanks...everything) and the machine is basically split in the middle. If you can do this yourself, and can get parts, great! If not, if your undercarriage is as worn as you indicate, it might be a candidate for the boneyard...or put it on eBay. You can always get some sucker to pay $2000-$3000 for a machine that needs $5000 in work!

According to the manual to overhaul the HLR trans you have to remove the engine , clutch housing and top covers on the trans. If you have to remove the ring gear you have to break the tracks remove the sprockts, pull the drive pinons and pull the steering clutches. The bearing quills can then be removed and the ring gear lifted out. You do not have to remove the tracks, rops, tanks, finals, steering clutch housings, unless you have to replace the trans case or ring gear according to manual. If you do need an overhaul almost all the parts for a 450 are aviable from Deere if you have deep enough pockets.

Did you check the temp gage and ensure it's reading accurately? Might want to make sure the trans oil pressure gage is also accurate, plus make sure the trans filters are clean and the brakes aren't dragging. Good luck.
