What is the purpose of the quick drop valve on a D6D? The blade wont stay up when it's raised. We pulled out the hyd. tank and checked the make up valve and the spool. The spool for the lift is very crunchy, and has groves worn in the valve body. The detent balls had flat spots worn on them. The tilt spool is nice and smooth like it should be. We ordered a new control valve the only one in the country. The cylenders will hold up the tractor when the blade is pushed all the way down.
The quick drop valve is shown in the parts book and on the hyd. schematic but its not even mentioned in the repair book.

Scott, your challenging my memory here as to exactly how they work but they was added to the dozer cyls early on so that operators of cable control dozers would use them. Hyd dozers dropped too slow so they added the quick drop valves to the ends of the cyls to allow rod end oil holding the blade up to go directly to head end with out returning to tank first. You better pull the system apart to find the source of the metal that ruined your valve. Dozer cyls and lines to tank, maybe clean the tank too. There are popet valves in the dozer pistons that might have broken up. They unload the system at the end of the stroke.

Thanks Bob
I have the tank out already because they put the valve inside the tank. We removed the quick drop valve and took it apart and replaced the spring and seals. I haven't found any trace of metal anywhere in the system. I think someone replaced the valve with a used one that wasn't all that good. The new one is on the way.
