The JCB backhoe has metric hoses, so if you get a JCB, you better be close to a dealer.

JCB use BRITISH STANDARD PIPE (BSP) threads on all thier machines from the start of production in the 1950s to the new one that I am doing the pre delivery check on to day. The only metric thread is the test ports fitted to the gearbox which are M10 by 1.0mm pitch.

I have a 1977 John Dere 410 that came off a golf course.
I use it for my personal rental business and it is really a very nice machine.
It does everything I want it to do.

I worked for an outfit running 35 backhoes and 16 excavators , we tried volvo's , jcb's , cats and case , Of this little group the JCB just comes out on top every time , As has already been said in other countries you dont say backhoe you say JCB , There is good reason for this .

Oh boy , Another pissing contest....Every manufacturer makes a good machine...It boils down to whatever you have good luck with..It's like I have a Chev Silverado pickup truck , and a Ford F-600 service truck, and a '49 Power Wagon...Why ,you ask??? I dunno , Maybe I'm a little dingy , but thats my empire..

Don"t overlook the Fords . I just had a 555B and it was a very good machine and parts were easy to get at my local New Holland Dealer. Prices of parts was a little cheaper on some stuff then the Deere"s I am used to.

They all build a good machine, but none of them are any good if worn out and beat up !! Just buy the one in best condition for the money.

I've been reading this forum for quite awhile now, and it does seem that Case is the generally accepted leader in TLB's. Of course it is a brand war sorta thing, so everyone's going to have a differing opinion. But Case was the first US manufacturer to put a truly integrated, high quality TLB together back in the 50's and they haven't looked back. That's why the 580 is probably the most widely manufactured and used TLB model ever. However, in the UK and perhaps elsewhere in Europe, JCB's are often considered the standard. In fact, in the UK the acronym "JCB" actually means "backhoe".

The catch is that you want to have a good dealer to support you that is reasonably close. Check that aspect out, and then choose wisely.

JCB actually produce more backhoe loaders than Case AND John Deere COMBINED per year and have done for many, many years. Plants producing BHLs in England and the USA.

Wow, JCB sells more than Deere and Case combined huh? I knew they made the most backhoes, but not that their TLB production exceeded those two major manufacturers combined. Do you have a source for this statistic?

Read it in a constuction magazine a while (could be a year or so ago) Was suprised myself. Don't know what I would buy, they all wear out and break down if you dont grease or look after them properly, I know for a fact that one won't dig a hole any better or worse than the other. In the U.K. Aus and NZ JCB have the market, I saw a few Case machines in the UK when I lived there, but they had an old David Brown engine in there leaking away merrily how they do, Cat sell a number of machines in the UK they have a plant there, and JCB can't be doing so bad in the U.S. as they have a plant there,so you can buy a British built American machine in England, or an American built British machine in America!

I second Larrys opinion. Some of the others have pretty good machines, but Case has THE machine.

None of the above. Get a Case. Fewer problems with leaks, pin wear etc.
