A JCB 3c Mk3 as I remember was a torque convertor forward/reverse shuttle coupled to a manual gearbox with a high and low range, that machine was known as a TC machine,it would take ATF in the torque/shuttle and ordinary EP90 in the gearbox/backaxle,the model after that was the same to look at but the transmission layout differed, the machine was known as a Powertrain, the layout was torque convertor,Borg Warner shuttle,Spicer 4 speed gearbox, propshaft and backaxle, this machine had inboard hydraulic brakes, the fluid for the shuttle ATF,EP80 for the gearbox and axle, note it is hydraulic oil that goes in the brakes.look under the machine to see if the backaxle is connected by a propshaft,if it is you got a Powertrain if not you got the TC,you do not want hydraulic oil in the gearbox of either machine, the TC machine would take about the 12gls as it does the axle as well, there is so much oil in there it is seldom changed, the shuttle in either is happy with the ordinary ATF that you would put in your car,if there is a JCB dealer near you it is hard to beat their oil prices, battries and grease etc.

JCB 3C 111possible pump problems in reply to Chuck Winston, 07-01-2006 10:38:28
I found the torque converter. A mechanic told me to drain the oil. I drained the transmission and the rear end. That came to about 12 gallons of really thick and nasty oil. Bought the tractor hydrolic fluid and followed directions to pour 2 1/2 gal.into the transmission and start the engine, let it run a couple minutes, wait a minute, then check the dip stick and it should be low due to the pump pumping it back to the rear end. It wasn't. I'm not sure the pump is working. The transmission is working fine (both fw and backward) but still no brakes. What do I need to do at this point?

I had not read this post when I replied to your other, determine what machine you have because one has mechanical brakes and the other hydraulic, but the no brakes sounds like the mechanical, they are adjustable with a deep 3/4 socket, look at the linkage underneath and you should see the adjuster bolt in between the linkage where it is connected to the brake housing, wheels off the ground, tighten the nut till the wheel is just stopped, back off two full turns.
Good luck

Shell Donax TD (or equivelent) in Torque converter trans. Super Tractor Oil Universal (STOU) in clutch/manual box.

With the torque converter trans you will have a fwd/rev lever on the dash for instant change of direction, with a manual transmission you will have a conventional clutch and have to change gear manually the same as you would on a Leyland tractor as that is the skid unit used on those machines.
