OK, My D3B started coughing and spurting like it was running out of fuel. So check the fuel 3/4 full. OK so its the fuel filter, replaced it, same thing. OK so maybe I didn"t bleed system well, bleed it 4 times no luck.

Here are the symptoms:
1) Idles fine, no problems, for hours.
2) Can crank throttle up to full if not working, runs fine.
3) Start working and after about a minute give it more than 1/2 throttle, starts sputtering. Black smoke. Turn down to idle will recover.
4) Start working again will again start sputtering.
5) Let it idle for 15 mintues will work well again for about a minute, then the problem starts all over again.

OK, I"ve never had an injection pump go bad before, is this a symptom? I don"t know what else it could be other than bad fuel, and I have 3 other machines running on the same fuel with no problems. Any other recommendations?

Thanks for any input.

Hello,
From the symtoms it sounds as if you have a fuel injection pump governor problem, perhaps worn and or sticking governor shaft/rack and fly weights.Black smoke is from lack of air or overfueling from inj.pump or loading down the engine too much from a trans. failure.

I have a D-3B 27Y that used to burn 3 litres of oil in 8Hrs,had lots of blowby had 1 broken piston skirt and cracked rings on 1 piston, and kept on working without an engine miss.Rebuilt it with aftermarket 3 ring pistons.

There should be a screen on the supply from tank side of transfer pump. It should look like an additional fitting screwed into the transfer pump that the supply line screws into.

I would first check for plugged air filters and if okay, I would then check for a restriction in the fuel supply line. Last I would check the fuel transfer pump. Should be about 30-40 psi. 10-15 psi will starve the engine for fuel when operating under load.

Change air filters first and check for any other intake restriction Chuck. Black smoke means you have lots of fuel but checking pressure is worth while too.

OK, the air filters were absolutely clean, I only changed them about 20 hours ago. I also checked for obstructions, none. I also ran the machine without air filters, the flow and suction seem very strong.

I do not have the ability to test the fuel pressure. I opened up the fuel pump and the oil ring on the cover does not fit as it should, perhaps that is the problem. I'll get one tommorrow and replace. Is a total fuel pump rebuild very hard?

It still seems like I am missing something. This happened all the sudden. Is there another fuel filter than the spin on one? In the manual it shows a screen on the injector pump. My machine does not have this or a priming pump on it.

What serial# is your machine???
Has anyone been working on it for you???
What happens if you put it in 3rd gear hold the brakes and open the throttle full???

My serial number is 27Y04395 I've had the machine since January of 2004.

My guys and I do all of the maintence and repairs, althought this machine has required very little except some starter work, and regular maintence.

Usually in 3rd gear full throttle with the brakes applied it would stop, but not bog out. With the current operation it would stall and sputter.

I don't think you want to hear this Paul but your engine may be dusted. I could tell you better if I was there to try it myself but I have seen this on D4H's while stalling the torque(3rd gear full throttle brakes on). The engine would load down slower and slower untill black smoke poured out the stack like a steam engine. Take the hose and the air intake elbow off the head and look for dust and dirt in the intake. It will drift in behind corners like snow drifts in behind a snow fence. Hope I am wrong here.

I don't think this is the problem, the black smoke doesn't pour out, it just seems like it is not firing on a few cylinders and the fuel is not burning. Plus it does not do it for the first minute when you start it, and I am not getting much blowby.

I am probably going to get the Cat service team out to look at it. I guess it could be anything, stuck valve, intermittent head gasket failure, stuck return line. Who knows, I appreciate your time and help.

One thing you could do Paul, is to take off the valve cover. Check the bolts holding down the rocker shaft are tight and also check the valve clearance. 0.015" intake and 0.025" exh.

Had Cat field service out, they tested the transfer pump, and the pressure was below the normal, but not by much. They replaced the pump and it runs like a champ. Thanks for the help and the advice.
