Hi,I just got done rebuilding the final on my jd450,the top pinion bearing went out and made a mess. The book says to use 303 hydro fluid in finals.I was thinking since it is just a big gear box with a pinion and bull gear and bearings would it be better to use 90wt gear oil in it instead of hydraulic fluid.Seems like the 90wt would climb the gears and lube the bearings and protect the gears better.Whats everyones opinion on this. Thanks

303 is the old name for John Deere Hyguard. You use Hyguard in the transmission and the finals in the 450. Do not use gear oil!

Hi,I know the transmission must use jd hyguard because of the clutch packs and pumps. But the finals are completely different units on a jd450 which contain the pinion, bull gear, axle shaft and 4 bearings and the fluid doesn"t intermix with the trans case.Seems to me that Deere may have only specified hyguard in the finals because it is used elsewhere in the crawler and is easy.It just seems to me like 90wt would be better on these gears, the reason I am thinking this is because most trucks use some type of atf in thier transmissions but when it comes to the rear end most use 90wt for its durability, shock resistance and strenth and after all to me a final drive is more or less the same as a rear end. Just my way of thinking but I might be nuts.

I see your point and I guess it would work fine if you have had it apart and cleaned out good to prevent cross contamination. But keep in mind that Hygaurd lubes the gears and the final drives in the transmissions on ag tractors and they have tremendous pressures on them and they run 10000 hours plus without problem. I think Hyguard protects the gears and bearings as well as gear oil and flows better too. Also the driven shaft seals on those finals are very expensive and specialized and I'am not sure but there could be issues with oil selection with them to. Deere would not recommend Hyguard if they didn't feel it was up to the job.

Hi,I've done a little searching around and found out that hyguard is a comprimise between plain hydraulic fluid and gear oil.It is made for use in the hydraulics and transmissions and it also has additives that make it suitable for a gear lube. The reason for this is like you say tractors use the same fluid for the trans hydraulics and finals. It is not the best lube for diffs or finals but it works in the whole system.I was just wanting to use the best lubricant possible in my finals as it was an expensive rebuild. But like you say 80w90 might not be compatible with the seals, looks like it should be ok though as the seals in the final are made of the same material as a rear diff. But why take a chance, the hyguard is definately approved by Deere besides its cheaper than 80w90 anyways. Thanks
