steering clutches will not steer the crawler anymore. They were fine and were recently used a lot with a leveling job. They now stop the tractor when both pulled back but will not allow the crawler to go left or right. We are in the process of taking the crawler apart to get to the problem...any suggestions or advice on getting parts ? Any advice on adjustments that can be made ? neither clutch wants to steer.

Will the pedal brake stop it or slow it down? That would let you know the bands are at least working in some fashion. When my machine is backing down a hill i stop the movement with the pedal brake and shift gears.

The brakes were stopping the crawler, it was the steering that is gone. Both sides went at the same time with the left side really dead and unresponsive. The right seems to be somewhat tight but does not allow the crawler to go to the right when pulled back.

If the machine is pushing OK and stops when they levers are pulled back the clutches are engaging and releasing so that doesn't sound like there's a problem with them. If it won't stear then the problem is brakes aren't holding for some reason. The first thing to check there are the adjustments of the clutches and brakes. if their not right it won't stear right. Worst case you've got a broken brake band. Not to long ago ours stopped steering to one side. When I got it opened up, it turned out the brake band had finally given up and broken due to old age and corrosion. We got a new band from Lavoy and she's up and running again no problem. The band he sent us was a brand new part and was actually a little heavier than the origional so it ought to last at least another 40 years or so. Good luck.

the crawler stops dead with both levers pulled back...when pulling back the right lever the crawler will not steer to the right it tracks to the right slightly when let to go forward , the left lever does no steering when pulled back when the crawler is going. Is this an adjustment that can be made through the top cover plate ??

Unless the brake band/s are broke or the lining is just plain worn out you ought to be able to adjust it through the top cover. It's been a few months since I did ours so I'd have to check the manual to make sure I gave you the right meaurements for the adjustments ut it doesn't take but a few minutes to go all the way through it, including adjusting the throwout bearing. This way you know everything is in sync. With everything in sync the clutch releases a little before the brake is actually applied so you can pull the lever and do either a slow turn with no brake, or a hard turn with the brake. If you do a search I remember telling somebody how to adjust everything not too awful long ago, you might be able to find it "right now". If not I'll gladly check the manual tomorrow and explain the proceedure again for you.

Thanks, I went through the search and found the directions for the 440 steering adjustments. I have ordered the manual and will try to adjust today. Thanks again for the help.

Something is funny, if they will stop the crawler, they should steer the crawler. What happens when you pull back just one lever?

when I pull back one lever they will not steer the crawler ..when let go straight the c tracks slightly to the right. The right lever will not take it to the right...it is like both levers lost the capacity to steer at the same time ? Is this an adjustment through the cover plate ?

If they do not slip and they still stop then it sounds like maybe an adjustment to each brake band may do it.

the crawler only stops if both levers are pulled back at the same time...if the crawler is tracking forward the the levers will not steer the crawler anymore the left one acts limpy and the right lever seems to grab but will not steer the crawler to the right...is it weird to lose both at the same time ?? is the adjustment hard to make ? and can it be through the top cover plates ?
