Case 580K suddenly won't drive

Hi, guys. I'm a city guy that bought 10 acres, a tractor ('59 Ford 901 PowerMaster) and an '89 Construction King backhoe -- all to fulfill a few nostalgic childhood dreams. 0h, and to build a new house!

I bought some books about backhoes, studied the Case operator's manual and started practicing. After a month of trouble free driveway making, tree clearing, trench digging and wreaking playful havoc with my 'hoe it just decided to stop playing.

I was trenching fifty yards of ditch, going up a slight incline, then tucked in the boom, pulled up the stabilizers and put it in Forward to pull up a bit for my next few yards of trenching. However, it acted like the brake was set (it wasn't) and gave off a light smoke from under the hood. After checking the obvious stuff (hoe up, stabilizers in, no obstructions, front loader raised) and still no luck, I shut her down fearing damage to the transaxle or engine.

The old girl hasn't had the best maintenance apparently since most of the gauges don't work. None show overheating, no warning lights or other indications of trouble.

I've checked the coolant and other fluids (keep in mind, it is on about a 5 degree uphill slope) but can't determine any problem except it looks like the main hydraulic tank may be low (doesn't appear to show fluid in the little sight window).

Do I need to buy genuine Case fluids or will the generic stuff you get at Orscheln's or Tractor Supply work?

I want to be careful I don't screw something up so I came to the source - you guys, before I do anything else. Can someone get me dialed in here? I do appreciate your advice. Thanks.

Thanks to all you great guys for your suggestions. I took your advice, got some generic fluid that met the OEM spec and brought it up to the proper level, fired it up and still it wouldn't pull. Then, I noticed at idle it was making a sound like when the hydraulics were straining. I checked the backhoe levers and found that the Extend-A-Hoe lever was stuck in the retract position, creating a demand that apparently superceded the torgue converter.

Anyway, I released the stuck lever and she drove off like a new machine. File that one away, oh ye troubleshooters.

Thanks again. I appreciate your help.

You do not need specialty oil - generic equivalents are fine as long as you use the correct ratings.. Back in the 60s, before most tractor companies were putting their own name on lubricants (that somebody else was making), automatic transmission fluid and/or lightweight 5W-20 motor oil was being recommended for wet-clutch transmission and torque-converters - and it worked fine. I don't know anything about Case 580Ks, but I've worked on plenty of 580CKs and 530CKS. With those, it is common for the key to shear on the transmission pump - and when that happens - it will not move. 580K may have the same - or may be totally different. Seems a simple pressure check is in order.

As said by the others check the fluid, check the feel of the lever as I have known the rod to come off the bottom of the lever shaft, one way you will know if the linkage for the forward/reverse is ok is to put it in forward or reverse and try to start the engine,it should only start in neutral position, your machine has an electric clutch (dump valve)cut out buttons on the bucket levers and gearshift,if any of the buttons are jammed down you would have no drive, take out fuse #6 second down middle row and try, that will eliminate any electrical problem if there is one.

I agree with JMS, your fluid level may be low and the torque converter isn't getting fluid like it needs. If it was shot you should have noticed symptoms of a problem before now, even with the guages not working. I just finished pulling the engine on a 580 to change the flex plate. A little bit of extra work I know but the fan belt was shot to so it was easier to do it all with the engine out. Anyway, I discovered that on that machine the rod ball end at the bottom of the Fwd/Rev lever had already fallen off at some point and had been tied back together with bailing wire. Check that on end on yours. If it has fallen off then it would act like the brakes are on because it wouldn't actually be going into gear. The ball end is made as an integral part of the rod which is about three feet long and shaped with several bends. You can repair it by cutting the end off and welding a 3/8 bolt in it's place and using a standard screw on type rod end as a replacement. Just make sure to maintain the same length so you won't have to readjust it. As far as the oil look in your manual and see what kind of oil they recommend and find an oil that meets those specs and you should be OK. I don't remember exactly what Joel said the book called for the other day when I finished his machine but I do remember it wasn't anything really special. I work on equipment for a living and very few customers that I know actually go back to the dealership for their oil when they can get the same stuff, at a better price, elsewhere. Good luck.

Torque converter shot? Fill oil to proper level- even on a slight incline, there should still be oil in the window. You just might be so low on oil that it will not move. Running with gauges and idiot lights not working is just asking for trouble. Those lights should light with the key on, engine off- that's how you know they are 'working'. If they don't light then, they won't light up when real trouble occurs. Gauges are a better indicator, but people forget to watch them.

Thanks. Do I need official Case (TCH?) hydraulic fluid or does that matter?
