Loader bucket drifts down

I had an old, from the 50's I think, Model 104 Trojan loader given to me. Got it running and gave it a little work out. It has a few issues, the most serious one is the bucket drifts down under its own weight. It will raise up and down fine, but I have to hold the lever slightly to keep from dumping a load. The loader arms work fine. They hold with no problem. I have a manual for it and the hydraulics are hooked up like it shows. Do you think there is a problem with the spool or seats? Is there a way to adust the spools? This machine hasn't run for awhile so maybe the spool body needs a good cleaning. Thanks for any help. John

I had that problem with my JD420 crawler blade. The "cup" on the end of the piston was bad. The way I found it was taking an old fashion oilcan, the kind you push on the bottom to squirt the oil out, emptying it and holding the bottom to your ear and the tip to the end of the cylinder where the end of the piston is inside the cylinder. You should be able to hear the oil gurgling past the cup. You'll have to get somebody to shut the engine down so you can hear. Worked for me.

First of the problem can be in the bucket cylinders or in the spool valve. You need to determine which one or if it is caused by both, One simple way of doing this would be to put a shutt off valve in the pressure line going to the loader bucket cylinders. Raise the bucket, close the valve, if the bucket still drops the seals in the bucket cylinder are bad, Do you have a pressure gauge. You can unhook the pressure line from the vale and move the handle to get a reading on the guage, let the handle go back to the center position and see how long it takes for the pressure to drop. Now remember all spools leak SOME. That is how they are lubricated. What you need to find out if yours is in spec or not. Do you have a manufature for the valve and maybe casting numbers. Most spools are selective fit to the housing. Questions?

I believe it is the cylinder in reply to J Schwiebert, 07-09-2006 06:13:50
Before I put the bucket on the one cylinder would drift out. I would start the engine and run it in and out a few times. After a day or so it would be out. There are some weld repairs on this cylinder. The two cylinders tee together and share a common line back to valve spool. Thanks for you replies.
