I'm working on a Cat 955L for a customer. It turns ok to the right but wont turn left. Clutches or brake band? The left track seems to stop OK, but the right just doesnt seem to pull good. All he wants is for this thing to just start and run so he can sell it.

there is also an adjustment for the steering clutches
the small plate w/4 bolts on the top of the very top cover. loosen the lock nut, run the adjusting screw in until the anvil will not turn, back it out 4 1/2 turn, lock the jam nut.

I think the throw out bearing or yoke pins are your problem. The bearing hasn't completely come apart yet or it would just stop when turning left. There are a few differnt release mechanisims so I don't know if there is any adjustment you could do. Look for a pair of square plates on top near center of cover. there may be an adjusting screw in there on a bell crank. Most likely you will need to do the throw out bearing though. That means pulling out the clutches. If you do pull them make sure to mark the side the beavelgear is on or your for/rev will be backwards.

Be sure to check the external linkages for wear and pins half falling out first. You likely have but can't make assumptions here. Take off covers with 3 bolts and adjust brakes up as tight as you can then back off 9 clicks/1&1/2 turns. Most brake adj. screws have spring locks that click but again some have a locking nut, can't remember which do.
