I have a D-4 ser 6U2123. I have 4 books. Cluch seems to be gone. I adjusted cluch and pushed dozer to start. ( pony not running just yet)Runs great. Cluch seems to be metal to metal. Book says I can change through top plate unless I have to pull motor. Does any one know if I do have to pull motor? I"m just looking for someone that knows more about this dozer then I do. I can buy fiber cluches from Cat for $500.00 something but don"t want to order until I know more about what I am doing.

fordson1954,

You can do it either way and I have know people to do it both ways. If equipment is mounted on the transmission case cover the clutch can be removed after removing the engine.

In viewing you S/N you have an early 6U, a 1948 so you will to take the Transmission Case Cover off if you don’t want to remove the engine. In some cases the early tractors had the front of he transmission case cover cut into for easier accesses to the master clutch if not you have to remove the whole cover. (on later tractors the front of the case can be removed, which is not a part of the whole Transmission Case Cover)

Take the fuel line loose, floor plate bolts (but don’t remove the plates yet), take off the dash , remove all the bolts holding the fenders to the transmission case, lift off the seat, fenders and fuel tank as a unit, remove the floor plates, remove the starting engine flywheel. Disconnect the flywheel linkage at the top of the lever in side the flywheel clutch compartment after removing the inspection cover. Remove the inspection plate at the rear of the transmission case cover and loosen the steering clutch adjusting screw until the adjusting screw is free of the socket in the steering crank. Remove the brake pedals or loosen the brake adjustment and swing the pedals forward. With the flywheel clutch lever forward lift off the transmission case.

If I have missed something here it will show up when you start to host off the transmission case cover. Note: when installing the transmission case cover, place the flywheel clutch lever in the forward or disengaged position to prevent the cams on the shaft in transmission case cover from damaging the gear shift interlock assemblies.

Thank You for all of the advice. I will look into the cover. If the cover is in one peace is it harder to pull the cover or the engin?
