I have a Ford 4500 with a model (??) backhoe. The cylinder that curls the backhoe bucket (is that the correct term?)is weak. I did a pressure check and found almost 2100 psi there, so I figured the cylinder must be by-passing internally so I ran the cylinder to the end of its stroke left the hose off and "dead headed" (right term?) put pressure against it to see if oil was getting by -- with the hose off I should see oil coming out. What I found was interesting there was high pressure on one side of the cylinder but oil was coming out of the disconnected hose -- I think oil is by-passing in the spool valve -- does this make sense to any of you??? Can I fix the one spool with the valve body still in the tractor -- what a pain to take off all those hoses! Suggestions??? Thank you!
Greg

Always plug the line you take off the cylinder..The oil you saw coming from the open port of the cylinder is packing leakage..I wouldn't fool around with the valve spools at this point..A machine thats 35 to 40 years old has every right to leak from the spool some..A lot of 4500 cylinders have come apart internally from the packing bolt coming loose..Very common from banging cylinder all the way out...Hope that shed some light on your problem....
