555 won't start

My neighbor wanted to do me a favor last week by changing the oil in my 1980 Ford 555 3-cyl diesel. He didn"t know where I stored the new filter, so he said he overfilled the crankcase so that I can just swap filters, and not worry about losing some oil. He drove the tractor back to my yard from his barn, and shut it off, but now it won"t start back up.

The tractor cranks and cranks, but no dice on starting. This machine used to start up lickity-split, even on a below-freezing day. Is it possible that the machine won"t start because it"s got too much oil in the case? The oil goes about twice as far up the dipstick as it should. I haven"t dumped the excess oil or changed the filter yet, because I usually do this in my barn where I have all the tools and equipment.

I"m going to drain some oil, but I was wondering if the excess oil could have damaged anything?

 Re: 555 won't start - problem solved in reply to jb_oh, 07-19-2006 13:04:36
I worked on it last night, and eventually found that the screen filter inside of the fuel tank was clogged. After pulling the supply line from the primary and secondary filters before the pump, I found that no fuel was being fed to the filters or pump from the tank. (This was after adding 5 gallons of fuel, "just to be sure" that there was no issue with being low on fuel.)

I checked the manual, and sure enough, there is a mesh filter inside the fuel tank, and while I didn"t take the filter out of the tank to thoroughly clean it (I"m pretty sure this involves pulling the tank out), I blew compressed air back through the supply line and eventually cleared the line.

Now the machine runs well again. I plan on changing the primary and secondary fuel filters and adding some fuel additive to hopefully clear up any gum from the tank filter.

Thanks for all the replies.
JB

It would help to know if you have a inline or rotary, the rack can stick in the stop position on an inline and the metering valve can stick in the rotary, either can stop the engine from starting.an inline will have the injector pipes in a line along the top of the pump,a rotary will have the pipes off the back in a circle.

Tell me the make of the fuel injection pump,it should have a lable, just the make no need to bother with numbers.

I probably won't be able to get that info until tomorrow (Saturday). Is there anything in particular I should be looking for, based on a particular make?

Sounds like a fuel problem, if you got a pull stop check to see that the lever on the pump is returning to the start position, if it stops with the key check to see the wire is on the solenoid on the pump and has power when switched on, the oil would not be stopping the engine from starting but it should not be overfilled either as you have oil seal etc to consider, the oil and filter should be changed at the same time.

AJ:
I checked to make sure there's fuel in the tank, and that the pull stop was fully in, but I didn't check the connections of the pull stop. I'll check the connections and see. In the past, the key would always crank the engine regardless of the pull stop positioned, it just wouldn't start if the pull stop was out (similar to what it's doing now), so the pull stop may be distinct possibility. I don't think there was ever any electrical interlock in place with the pull stop to prevent the key from cranking -- it seemed more mechanical like just cutting off the fuel supply. I'll check it an see if that leads anywhere.

I figured it was a fuel problem, but I didn't know if the oil being over-full was a potential cause of the problem as well. I still have to put the new oil filter on and drain some of the excess oil, but probably won't get to it before the weekend. I appreciate my neighbor helping me out, but it always seems to be the case that a favor never goes unpunished -- for either side.

The neighbor also greased the whole machine at the same time he changed the oil, so he may have knocked something loose. It still doesn't explain how he drove it back to my yard, though...

Does this engine have an overspeed cutout to prevent overspeeding the engine? They're usually connected to the tach drive and may just need to be reset. Hal

I'm not sure of the over-speed. What would it look like, and how is it reset?

I do know that the neighbor drove the tractor on the road to get back to my house, but I wouldn't think he would have revved it up too high, since it's only a few hundred yards away. And, I'm still confused about why it quit wanting to start only after he got it parked in my yard. Very puzzling.

When you shut that engine off, how is it done? Some crawlers and backhoes are shutdown by pulling back on the throttle and needs to be depressed when starting the engine. Hal

In order to stop the engine, I pull out the stop switch. I believe this cuts off the fuel supply (machanically?)

Throttle position has never really come into play with shut-off.
