Komatsu D-20P Dozer Clutch Removal

I read with interest an exchange between D Andrews and RB on pulling the clutch assembly of a Komatsu D-20P, because I am doing exactly the same thing. All the bolts are out, and I have the winch & strap supporting the clutch housing, but I can only get it to move about an inch and a half. Then it hangs. The shop manual says to remove the "clutch pilot" but doesn't show what it is. The parts manual doesn't show a clutch pilot at all. My local Komatsu dealer (Berry Tractor, Springfield, MO) was unable to help, as well.

I would truly appreciate any advice, guidance, or assistance anyone can provide?

Thanks very much.

Butch,
Are you in Sullivan, MO? If so, I not only might be able to help you, I know you.

Reply back, I'll see what we can do.

Dale,

No, we have a little place a bit south of Richland, Missouri. I might consider moving, though, to get help with this consarned Komatsu...(just kidding).

I do travel through Sullivan periodically on business travel, and it isn"t that far. I"d certainly be willing to invest a trip to find out how to get these clutch packs to release.

Thanks in advance for any advice or assistance you can provide.

Sincere Regards,
Butch

I guess the world is a pretty small place - I have a friend of mine who is named Butch Ferguson (here in Sullivan).

As far as any specific knowledge of Komatsu machines, I have none - but if I could see what was going on, I might be able to help. There must be a trick to it. My grandpa always believed that if someone else was smart enough to design and build something, he should be smart enough to be able to fix it. I try to live by that (although it has cost me lots of time, money, and skinned knuckles).

From reading your previous post, it sounds to me like the clutch pilot is the tube that the throwout bearing rides on. It probably bolts on, so one should be able to unbolt it. I would assume that you would then slide the drive axle back into the differential to get it out of the way. Can you tell what it is hanging on? That would probably be able to tell you what you need to try to move, then you can see what it will take to move it.

Keep me posted, I will try to help any way I can. Hope this helps.
