The 580E is fitted with a Borg Warner shuttle box,the box has to be in neutral for the starter to work, there is a intermittent switch fitted to the box with two wires connected to it,check to see that the switch is not loose and that both wires are on it,it is on the right side of the box looking forward, for a test you could put the two wires together, under the flap in front of the windscreen there is two relays, one is for the starter, swop them over as they are the same,to start the engine by bypassing the starting circuit and with the machine out of gear and the key switched on cross the light wire on the starter motor solenoid with the main battery cable.
Good luck
AJ
