oil burn

I have a 77 Cat D6D that has started using about a gallon of engine oil in 6-8 hours. How much is too much and will any additive (like Lucas, etc) slow down consumption. How far away is a new engine/overhaul and how expensive. Engine is 3306 turbo charged 140hp.

Craig-Bob is probably right on the money about the rebuild. Did it just suddenly start using oil? Are you using a good oil and is it being changed out regularly. There are a lot of cheap
oils available that are just plain junk. If the rings are just plain worn away , there is no secret additive to fix that. You can use a heavier oil that will slow the burn down. Also increase the oil change frequency. You could be geting a lot of dilution with diesel fuel. We have been seeing a lot of lighter than normal diesel fuels in the market these days. I have had samples in the lab from Norfolk Southern railroad and I was surprised to see the light boiling range. I would think that teh CAT OEM would specify a boiling range.

Why is it burning oil. if it is the turbo you need to do something about it quick. check you blowby, the line coming off the valvecover, it may be worn rings or you could have bad valve quides. I would plan on on 5000.00 and do the job right. replace the cylinder liners, rings rod bngs and have the head worked and replace the kit in the turbo. run it thru the summer and keep a check on the oil wait until the winter slowdown. I use a lot of aftermarket gaskets, liners & pistons. you can cut your parts cost by about 25%. to check the turbo for using oil take the tube from the turbo to the intake portion of the head loose and check for oil. It should be dry

Thanks guys. That gives me a starting point. I will check the turbo. If I am not mistaken, there should be some blowby idling but should go away when sped up? I am assuming the $5000 is for parts only. Thanks, Craig
