Im thinkin about buyin this old HD4 allis-chalmers dozer, got some steering clutch problems, owner says that if he tightens em up enough to where it will spin the tracks it wont cut, if he loosens em enough to turn it wont push...anyone got any idea how big a job it is to replace steering clutches in this unit and what kind of $$$ Im lookin at if indeed it is steering clutch problems?
ps gonna try to include a pic, not sure of the year but I think early 70s.

The early HD4s have a problem with the bolts breaking that hold the steering-clutch packs together. It makes proper adjusting impossible. If you pop the top covers off, you can see if they are broken or not. Early bolts were 5/16" and AC updated to 3/8" Grade 8. Each clutch pack has six and it can be drilled out to accept the larger bolts. You can also replace the original bolts, without taking anything apart if you do so with the original size. Also, in regard to the clutch disks - early ACs had fiber disks, but they changed over to metallic. The metallics don't get stuck as easy as the older fiber disks. If you buy parts direct from an AC/AGCO dealer,they only sell the metallics now.
