I just purchased a 420C with a gear reverser which does not work. I have purchased the crawler for parts and would like to install the reverser in a 420 that I am restoring. I have been told that they are hard to repair and do not work very well. Anyone out their have experience with the gear reverser? The crawler also has a 5 speed transmission and the one I am restoring has a 4 speed, which is better?

Bob,
They are not particularily hard to work on, just read the service manual carefully and you should not have any problem.
The reverser's work just fine, a long as you understand it is a gear type, not clutch type reverser. You can not shift it on the fly, the crawler must be stopped to shift.
The 5 speed gives you a gear in the 3 3/4 MPH range, otherwise the rest of the gears are about the same. We have 3 machines with gear type reverser, two of which have been rebuilt, and we have no trouble with them. I would however recommend not pulling an extremely heavy load backwards, in a forward gear and reversed. We always use reverse for this type of work. The gear set in the reverser is not that big, and it may prevent problems down the road. Hope this helps,
Lavoy

Echo Lavoy, and emphasize DEAD stop to shift. The 4-speed is okay only if the shifter has the external cage to guide you into gear.
