I'm looking for a picture of a new 17000 (ad/brochure) or one thats been restored. I ran a few old draglines that had these engines and just thought it was a great lookin V8 diesel engine albeit mammouth for its output...even better would be a vid of one being fired up and run but I wont hold my breath on that one.. Id appreciate any links that you find..... Don

The D17000 was used in the General Electric
44 ton centercab switching locomotive. It has 2 D17000's for power, one at each end. There are still some of these running at railroad museums as well as industrial users.

Head over to ACMOC board and ask "SJ" about that, he is a retired Caterpillar mechanic, used to run the engine shop, he has worked on this one if I recall correctly, someone will have some photos there. Not sure if these were used for gensets or marine applications as well.

I've got a 1942 Cat engine brochure that has a couple of good pics and specs on the D-17000, including a nice cross-section. I agree, the thing is massive for only 190 HP. They also used it on railroads, as my 1946 Diesel railroad book shows the D-17000 in that application. I'll see if I can scan them in over the next weekend, and send them to you if you want.
