Located a JD 40 crawler with a busted left rear bullgear housing. What do you suppose caused it and how hard are they to find and replace?

The lion's share of them get broken from abuse or lack of maintenance. If the axle seal goes bad, the oil leaks out, dirt gets in, and the bearings go out. When a couple of the rollers from a bearing get carried up between the gears, something has to give, and usually it is the housing.
