I Have a TD-14 that has had a gas engine from a W-9 tractor put in it using the TD-14 bell housing. it ran pretty good but lacked power. we rebuilt the engine and went thru the head and now we can't get the timing set right. when we set it where it makes good power it won't start hot. when you get it too start good it's way down on power. Looking for any help in getting this beast correctly timmed so we can start enjoying it.

Here's my opinion. If it doesn't wan't to start with the timing set where it is running strong, maybe the starter/ batteries are weak and won't crank the engine fast enough. Or, maybe the advance mechanism (centrifugal?) isn't working to retard the timing when the engine isn't running.

Check the compression on each cylinder. Back off the valve adjusting nut 1/4 turn and recheck compression. Repeat this a few times on each valve until compression comes up. Once you see compression come up evenly across the motor; then it should run.

Are you running a magneto or distributor?

Is it the original unit?
