If an HD 5 cannot be turned left or right is it the steering clutches or the brakes? Are the brakes and steering clutches the same thing or two different items? And if it does have breaks are they the disc type or exactly what do they consist of and how hard is repair or replacement? Lots of questions but I really need some answers here. Thanks.

MGB,
The steering clutches are a multi-disk dry clutch pack inside a steel drum. The brakes are a band type on the outside of the drum. The clutches are operated by the steering levers and the brakes are operated by the brake pedals. The brakes and clutches operate indepently of one another. The brakes can be applied without the clutches and the clutches can be release without the brakes but to turn you need to use them together. Release the clutch on the side you want to turn toward and apply that side's brake to turn. More brake, more turn. The HD-5 steering system is one of the easiest to work on. The brakes and clutches can be removed without removing any other drivetrain components. You should get a repair manual for your machine. They show up from time to time on Ebay or you can buy it at this site or a Fiat-Allis dealer if you can find one.

This is probably old news by now, but I have to say it! If you apply the foot brake without pulling the steering clutch lever, all you are going to do is wear out the brake, maybe burn it up if you hold it long enough. You have to pull the lever first, then apply the brake. When the turn or correction is completed, you release the brake first, then the lever. By using the lever only, you can make a gradual correction if you are under no load.

Hey MGB, Ok on the first ? the brake is what actually makes the tractor turn, but it has to be used in conjunction with steering clutch (i.e. the steering clutch releases and the brake applies to turn machine) brakes and clutches are 2 different things but they work together, the brakes are a band type that goes around steering clutch housing, I put clutches and brakes in a HD4 last year wasn't hard to do but best i remember parts were very expensive. When you try to steer the tractor is it bogging the engine or anything? If it is its a clutch release problem.
