JD440 ability

I found a JD440 Industrial track loader for what seems to be a decent price, $3000. Owner claims it starts and runs good, tracks are original and "seem to be in good working order". I need a small dozer to push cactus, cedar and rock in the Texas hillcountry. I also want to bury a burned out mobile home and not sure if these old classics have what it takes. Most of my projects are relatively small, but too big for the 20hp Kubota front loader. Being new to crawlers, but already addicted, does this model have the power to do what I need? I'm going to look it over this weekend and sure could use some advice. Thanks!

I have a 1960 440ICD crawler loader and with the counter weights it it will weigh 10-11,000 Lbs your 20hp Kubota will do good to weigh 2500LBS. If it has the 831 loader on it , it has 8500lbs of breakout force and at ground level it will lift 7000lbs and at full lift height it will lift 3300lbs, a heaped bucket is 7/8th a yard.It will do anything with in reason you would ask

430WLPG says the JD440IC with counter weights is 10-11,000lbs. The literature I found say the shipping weight for the JD440 is 5850lbs. Is the literature wrong? If the crawler really wieghs 11,000lbs, I'm going to need a bigger trailer to haul it. Say it ain't so!

I'm afraid it is so!The basic diesel crawler weights 6300lbs and the 831 loader weights with bucket,4 counter weights and scarifier 4331lbs. So do the math 10631lbs. All this came from the operation manuals

I have missed ours a few times since it was sold. If you get one that isn't all worn out you can do alot of work with it. You will really be surprised at what you can lift and push. I'd say they lift more like 5,000 lb if you have a counter weight to hold the back end down. I had a ford 555B TLB that would lift about as much 5,000 to 6,000 lb ? but when lifted I could not go anywhere like I could with the crawler.

I have one I use in the hill country around camp wood texas. I think it will do what you want, as I have had good luck with mine. Just take your time.
I had the 6 foot blade that I sometimes use instead of the bucket and it will do well at smoothing some of my roads.

Rob,

As Lavoy says, they'll do a lot of work. I had one and kept losing bearings in the final drive working it too hard. Went to a much larger tractor.

Recently checked out a 440 diesel loader for a buddy. He brought it home. Has a couple of hydraulic problems, but in amazing shape otherwise. $3k would be a good price for you here. I got $5k when I sold mine a few yrs ago.

My friend will be moving 150 tons of broken concrete with his. It'll work OK as long as he doesn't push it too hard. If I'd known, I'd have broken the concrete a little smaller.

Get an owners' manual and read it.

Rob,
440 with a loader will do a lot of work, just don't think it is a D8. It will do a lot more then it's size would lead you to believe. Depending on which loader, it is rated at 3,000lbs or more lift, and that is conservative.
