Well, another day, another problem. Machine gradually getting hot. Already flushed the radiator with genuine Cat cleaner, installed new Cat antifreeze with distilled water, replaced the totally failed pressure cap, and remachined the lumpy interior surface of the fill cap and installed a new rubber gasket. I think I have all the little things done. Still getting hot. I guess the next step is the radiator. The question is is it worthwhile trying to rod out a radiator of this age, or go directly for a new core? I wouldn't think that this is a waterpump or thermostat problem. It has already had the 13K engine overhaul, 13K transmission rebuild, 13K SALT undercarriage, and the ?K hydraulic valve rebuilt to go with the 5K bucket. Where does it stop?
Any suggestions outside of Cat to find a premium core?
Thanks in advance,
Dennis

One more thing, make sure your fan isn't installed backwards. A backward fan will blow air the right direction but will be at 1/3 the air volume. Stand in front of the radiator with the engine at high idle, there should be a strong flow of air. A D8 or D9 will blow the hardhat right off your head.

is your temp regularator (Thermostat) still installed? If it is not the water may be traveling to fast to give up heat. another thing to check is the pulleys, all three
a "V" belt is supposed to run on the shoulders of the grove not the bottom, I have see this be the overheating problem on more than one occasion. On tractors before 5500 some of hte pulleys are wrong the crank shaft bully should be slightly larger than the fan pully. they are interchangable and could have got swapped at overhaul. after market radiator cores are availavle, and a lot cheaper than Cat. Do you have a bent fan blade?

Yes it is worth a try. It would be good to get an infared thermometer and check the temps at temp regulator housing, top rad tank, bottom rad tank, and water pump. The max temp should be around 185 deg F, top to bottom rad temp drop should be 10 to 20 deg F. Make sure core is externally clean and belts are tight and not slipping. Also check the throttle linkage and make sure you are getting high idle. A slow running engine will still get hot but not cool as quickly. One more thing, are the baffels(pieces of steel with rubber attached) all in place around the radiator?
Later Bob
