Hello, I am trying to find the serial number on an old D8800 Caterpillar engine and was wondering where to look. I have searched high and low on the old bugger and have come up with nothing. I would like to buy an owner's manual for it, but I apparently need a serial number first so I can get the right one. Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks,

Tom

the tag may be missing look for the two small holes where the drive screws attached it then scrape the paint off it should be there. I believe here is one consolidated manual that covers all of them but the parts books are still by sn

Thanks Bob, I appreciate the info! So far, upon preliminary inspection in the general location, I have not found any screw holes (probably have not yet scraped away enough grease!), but have found a couple of numbers behind the pony motor. One number appears to be on an intake for the big engine and one looks as though it is on some kind of a side cover for the main engine towards the front of the pony motor. I am not sure whether either are serial numbers or not. There is a lot of grease on the block as this engine has operated many years powering an old saw mill. I suspect, as you have stated, that the serial number is on a serial number plate that is normally screwed directly into the side of the block as changing sn numbers on a casting for the block can become quite expensive during manufacture! Any more assistance will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again and I will keep looking!

Tom

HI You should find the serie number on left side big motor just near the housing cluch transmission and the decompression lever and should be behind the poney on big block motor just before the pan but nut easy to find. good luck.
