JD 350B Starting Issues

Need some help from the experts. My 350B Dozer has to be jumped or have a battery charger on it to start. If it's not hooked up to the extra power it does not try to turn over, growl, or anything. With a little extra juice hooked up she starts in a split second.

I have had the starter rebuilt. Starter man said I don't think the starter was your problem. I checked the battery out on a load tester and it is good. After sitting a month or so, it shows 12.40 volts. When you hold the meter on the battery and push the start button it drops to 11.80 volts.

Questions: is there a solenoid in the series somewhere besides mounted on the starter? My theory is the full voltage is not getting put to the starter or we would see a larger drop at the battery or even hear it try to turn over.

Your diagnosis please
Thanks for the help

There is nothing else inline. I would check the battery ground. I had to put an extra ground wire on mine.
I ground from the neg. post to the chasis, and then from the neg to the engine block.
I would almost bet the ground is the problem.

Just had a similar problem with my 450C. Turned out the ground on one battery cable were it bolted to frame was rusted and conducted no current. The other battery had a bad positive connection were it connected to the master cut of switch. I cleaned everything up good and now it fires up before I can release the starter switch, and just to think the guy I recentally bought it from was sure it needed a new set of batteries, good thing I checked things out before I went out and bought a set.LOL..
