A friend of mine has recently purchased a 450 C hilift.Trans. started slipping when hot.Went through procedure in manual.Adjusted clutch free travel to 3.75"(clutch is almost completely out of adjustment on threaded rod but did get 3.75")Installed gauge in port.Gauge was only showing 65 psi.Removed rubber plug and turned 1/2" nut according to manual. Can tun pressure up to 160 ,but cannot get it to drop 5 psi.as the nut is turned further.Have rechecked settings several times and cannot get gauge to drop the 5psi as specefied in book. Also according to manual, when clutch pedal is depressed 1/2 -3/4" the pressure on the gauge should rise 5 psi.On this machine the pressure drops 10 psi. Moved on to pressure test It is within specs.180 psi @ 1800.Removed plug from side of trans. case for speed of shift adjustment. This slotted screw is having no effect on speed of shift. All the way in,all the way out or anywhere in the middle makes no difference on the speed of shift. This trans is shifting WAY to fast and hard. Any ideas?

Man , it sounds like you've done about everything..Try turning in the clutch housing adjustment in slowly to see if you can get it to drop pressure..If it drops pressure [ clutch pedal usually starts to go down right about there],back it out slightly so the pedal goes to it's stop..Now adjust around there , you should be real close.. Some transmissions are real touchy to adjust..Also on the side case adjustment take it to about 3/4 turn from bottomed out. I made a socket to adjust that out of an 11/16" deep socket with a roll pin driven into the ball hole in the socket..This makes it easier to turn the socket while turning a shortened screwdriver for the screw thru the socket..Less guesswork that way..Sometimes the compound lever on the clutch pedal cross-shaft will be rusted to the linkage there causing adjustment problems too..Everything has to move to make it act correctly..

Thanks for the reply.Have worked on this machine 2or 3 times now and cannot resolve this speed of shift prob. Do you know if the speed of shift screw should have spring pressure against it? After breaking the locknut loose, the screw turns very easily like there is nothing against it.We were also thinking that by the clutch linkage being completely to the end of its adjustment that all the linkage inside the bellhousing was turned too far and thus affecting other adjustments. The trans. no longer slips and appears to be in working order other than the speed of shift problem. Thanks again

No spring tension...Just an adjustable oriface..Like I said if external linkage on the clutch pedal isn't free to rotate , it won't work right..Just because the pedal goes down easily doesn't mean the linkage adjacent to it isn't rusted stuck..If you turn the adjustment screw on the pedal [ backing it out] does the bolt raise as you turn it out?? If so , the linkage is rusted stuck and probably won't work right till it's freed up....
