D4 just stopped. Runs fine. will not move. This is the neighbors dozer and fortunately he was on it when he was doing me a favor. Great neighbor - want to help him. He has replaced the trans. filter - nothing happened. FLuid levels all OK, No leaking. He now feels like the whole transmission needs to be redone. I am wondering as a complete novice if there are other intermediate steps to check on before taking the transmission apart. This guys is an all or nothing type and it just seems to me there has to be a series of things to check. I read on the board about a pump filter as well as the transmission filter. Are they different? If separate where is the pump filter located?

Thanks for your help

Jeff it is most likely the trans pump pressure has been lost. Need a hose and gauge to check. Does the engine load up when the trans is in gear or run free? There are pressure ports at the back of the trans for the high pressures 400 psi. the one on the filter housing is just lube pressure. It's unlikely you need a complete rebuild if it was running good before but cutting open the trans filter will confirm this.

Bob, Engine Runs Free - another question- is there a suction filter or screen that may be clogged?

Jeff this could get involved so you had better email me at 104060.414@compuserve.com I can get more info on the weekend to help you out. There are screens but I need to look at a book before saying more. The pump is on the back of the converter and may be the problem, it has a couple of sections it recirculates and divides flow. A bit confusing to explain, may need to email some pic's.

Jeff; your best bet is to go to www.antiquecaterpillar.net. Think you'll have to register to get on the board, but no cost and you can get your help there. Lots of experience there and good people. Good luck, LE
